When the news first broke of Nollywood actor Desmond Elliot going into politics and campaigning for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly 2015, a lot of people were skeptical.

The 40-year-old actor is however not letting that hold him back and is currently organizing a youth interactive session with the theme “Today’s Youth, Today’s Leaders: Our Tomorrow Is Today”.

Abuja (NAN) – A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tom Ikimi, on Tuesday announced his decision to withdraw his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is contained in a letter he signed and addressed to the APC National Chairman, John Oyegun, in Abuja.

Ikimi’s letter read in part: “I have made the decision to withdraw my membership from the APC with effect from today, Aug. 26, 2014.

“Kindly find forwarded to you herewith my statement released today bearing the title ; All Progressives Congress (APC) – My Reflections.

“I wish to particularly draw your attention to the last paragraph of the document stating the withdrawal of my membership from the party.’’

It will be recalled that Ikimi contested the National Chairman of APC and lost to Oyegun.

Former vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, on Monday picked All Progressive Congress (APC) nomination form to contest the presidential election primaries on the party’s platform.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Atiku is the first candidate to pick the nomination form on the party’s platform.

Atiku, speaking to journalists after picking the form charged the party leaders to ensure a level play ground for all presidential aspirants before and during the party primaries.

In his remarks he said: ”Mr Chairman, I need not let you know my political antecedents as far as the provision of a level playing field for every member of this party because that is the only thing or one of the things that will make us different from the ruling party.

”Anyone who believes he has the democratic right should be given that opportunity to exercise that right. It is left to the members of this party and the Nigerian public to make a decision.

”Mr Chairman, it is my therefore my singular honor and privilege to hand over to you or your representative two receipts: one, presidential expression of interest and the second one, presidential nomination form all totaling N27.5million.”

He said he believed he could go on to receive his forms and then go onto the next stage.

The National Chairman of the APC, John Oyegun in his remarks prayed for a day when other Africa nations will see Nigeria as the ultimate before others in the comity of nations.

He prayed God to give Nigerians a leader that will have the interest of the people at heart.

Oyegun also assured that the party is looking forward for a contest that is totally rancour free, believing that one of them will eventually emerge with others joining hands to make sure that Nigeria becomes the pride of black nations.

     

Former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, is warning political parties about what he has described as the danger of having Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2015 elections.

In a press statement released to journalists in Abeokuta on Sunday, he stated that Nigeria is too religious conscious for such an arrangement, Vanguardreports.

Here is the statement he released on the matter:

Sensitivity is a necessary ingredient for enhancement of peace, security and stability at this point in the political discourse and
arrangement for Nigeria and for encouraging confidence and trust.

It will be insensitive to the point of absurdity for any leader or any political  party to be toying with Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket at this juncture.

Nigeria cannot at this stage raise the spectre and fear of Islamization  or Christianization. The idea of proselytization in any form  is a grave danger that must not be contemplated by any serious -minded politician at this delicate  situation in Nigeria, as
this time is different from any other time.

Therefore, disregarding the fact that there are fears that need to be allowed  at this point will amount not only to insensitivity of the highest  order but will also amount to very bad politics indeed.
